I hope Fred Otnes doesn't mind!

Here's my first attempt at a Fred Otnes imitation. I've been an Otnes fan for a long time and have always marveled at his compositions and their historical ambiguity. I've wanted to give it a go for a long time myself and though the results are somewhat embarassing, I'm still pleased with what I learned from the process. Otnes uses more fragments so I've got to resist using complete images so much. I'm going to keep doing these I think. Collage making in Photoshop is great fun but there's nothing like working with real stuff. I hope I can somehow find my own voice as I move forward!

By the way, the piece is called "Gear, Tackle, Trim" which comes from a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem (my wife's idea!).

I too am an Otnes fan. In fact I just completed an Otnes influenced collage titled "Homage to Fred Otnes". It's different from any collage I've done since I started doing them about 10 years ago. So if you care to look at my website: gerrycharm.com you won't see the master's influence, but I hope you'll appreciate my work up to now. - Gerry

PS: I'm twice your age, no kidding. I too worked as a graphic designer in NYC for most of my professional life.
PPS: Tried to see your web but the only thing that camr up was a black and yellow series of checks.

Hi Gerald, Thanks for the note! When you go to my site, try clicking on the one white square...

Hey Kevin: Thanks for the speedy response. I guess I should have figured out that the white square was the key to unlocking the site. I never got to be really computer literate and thats why I stopped doing graphic design in the early 80s. But I think your designs for book jackets are superb. I never use the computer in my collage work. Cutting and pasting are therapeutic for me.
