Another "Fred Otnes" attempt

More successful this time around I think. Otnes is extraordinary and working on these makes that even more apparent to me. I wish I had access to his techniques/equipment (photoengraving?) but alas I will have to make do with what I've got (Lazertran decal paper). (the quality of the photo is poor — it's just a snap with my digital camera. I'll see if I can't take a better one later) More to come I'm sure!

Plagiarized?

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I can't decide whether my book cover design was deliberately copied or if it's just a coincidence that the basic design elements of the two covers are the same. The Gorman is mine, by the way, and came out a full year before Reasoner.

Could someone ID this jazz song for me?

I'd love to find out who recorded this short tune. Anyone?

I hope Fred Otnes doesn't mind!

Here's my first attempt at a Fred Otnes imitation. I've been an Otnes fan for a long time and have always marveled at his compositions and their historical ambiguity. I've wanted to give it a go for a long time myself and though the results are somewhat embarassing, I'm still pleased with what I learned from the process. Otnes uses more fragments so I've got to resist using complete images so much. I'm going to keep doing these I think. Collage making in Photoshop is great fun but there's nothing like working with real stuff. I hope I can somehow find my own voice as I move forward!

By the way, the piece is called "Gear, Tackle, Trim" which comes from a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem (my wife's idea!).
